DrIFT as of 2.2.1 now supports binary for this package. using it is as
simple as this:

> import Data.Binary
> 
> data Foo = Foo Int Char | Bar Foo
>     {-!derive: Binary -}

and then compiling with the following extra options to ghc

ghc -pgmF drift-ghc -F ...

now everything will be taken care of automatically.
