Understanding database queries as (specific) functional programs is far from being an obsolete endeavor. Quite the contrary. Think LINQ (Microsoft) or Links (Philip Wadler). Or Kleisli (Limsoon Wong). Or monoid comprehensions (Leo Fegaras). Or Ferry (my group at U Tübingen) [1].
