Many thanks to those of you who replied to my first mail. My apologies for 
not replying to you all individually.

>From the responses I received from my first request it is clear that my first 
message was to vague, so I will take this opportunity to to outline what I am 
searching for.

     What I am really seeking is information on what constitutes a good 
Functional Programming Enviroment, and do these attributes correlate with those
attributes of an Imperative Programming Enviroment. I have been unable to
find any good material on this. Are you aware of any research which has 
examined this area ?

     Even if you are unable to recommend any material I would still be glad to 
read any opinions you would have on this area.
