The Glasgow Computing Science Department is seeking two new members of academic (i.e. faculty) staff, one permanent (i.e. tenured) and the other temporary. I am very keen to attract excellent researchers to the department, especially ones interested in language design and implementation (and most especially if they are functional programmers, strict or lazy!). I'd be happy to discuss the department and its research with you if you are interested in applying. Simon Peyton Jones Lectureships in Computing Science at the University of Glasgow ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The University invites applications for one permanent and one temporary lectureship (one year duration) in the Department of Computing Science. The Department is dedicated to the highest standards in both teaching and research. We are actively developing new courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We have strong research groups in persistence and distribution, formal methods, functional programming, graphics and human-computer interaction, and information retrieval. We have a developing group in systems with particular emphasis on quality of service in networks and operating systems, and reconfigurable chip technology. Applicants must possess the enthusiasm and ability to fit into a dynamic academic environment, together with appropriate experience in teaching and research. Applicants will be considered from any area of computing science that fits our teaching commitments and research interests, but for one of the posts preference will be given to applicants with expertise in computer systems (e.g. architecture, communications, real-time systems, or operating systems). [SLPJ comment: this means that the best overall applicant will be offered the permanent post. If s/he isn't a systems-architecture person then we will try to offer the temporary appointment to someone who is.] The permanent lecturer will be appointed on the Lecturer A or B scale (UK pounds 15,154-26,430 per annum), and the temporary lecturer on the Lecturer A scale (UK pounds 15,154-19,848 per annum) at points determined by age, experience, and ability. Applications (eight copies from UK applicants, one copy from overseas applicants) must be sent to Personnel Services, Recruitment Section, University of Glasgow, Glasgow G12 8QQ by 21 June 1996. Each application must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae, list of publications, and names and addresses of three referees. In all correspondence please quote reference number 9223 (permanent post) or 9222 (temporary post).
