Just a suggestion: Simply use Majordomo for the mailing list.

It has none of these problems, is extremely easy to install, and is very
well documented. We run different mailing lists via Majordomo here
without any fuzz. And while I'm at it, here is a long-standing wish for
all Haskell-related lists: Please automatically prefix the subjects with
something like [haskell], [ghc-bugs], [ghc-users]. This makes automatic
mail filtering/sorting much more reliable.
