Because stupid GUI software automatically turns the one into the other,
instead of treating it as a presentation issue. I mean, if the editor can
tell when to do the conversion on *input*, then the display device can
just as easily do it on *output*.

Same with smart-quotes, smart-ellipses, and so on. I'm surprised Windows
doesn't convert "file" into "file" just to be difficult.
