Yes, yes, so hating Windows is like shooting fish in a barrel, but here goes

A helpful little dialog box has popped up telling me that

Updating your computer is almost complete. Your computer needs to be
restarted for the updates to take effect. Windows will restart your
  computer automatically in 5:00 minutes.

Do you want to restart your computer now?

                              Restart Now Restart Later

only "Restart Later" is greyed out.

What the fuck? Who told you that I wanted to update? RealOSes tell me that
an update has a mandatory restart, and ask if I want to update at all.

Not JFDI and then hold a gun to my head. (15 seconds left...)

Actually this isnt hateful software really, its hateful
administrators. The setting you are describing are controlled by your
companies security policies and not by XP directly. Yes its hateful
that Microsoft allows this stuff, and its hateful that the people
involved tend to be pea-brains who cant tell a secretary from a
developer but the fault here is purely human, and not software.

If you have local-admin rights you can override the policies that are
enforcing this garbarge, but many firms will consider doing so a
violation of their security policies and therefor grounds for
dismissal.

If you really want to know how to regain control of your pc id be
happy to give you tips on #p5p.
