The only use I've had for Visio was to encapsulate a sectond of an Excel spreadsheet so I could import it into Word without Word hatefully trying to merge the cells with the table around it.
However, you might find that there's a way to export to PDF? Another trick I've done is to set up a fake postscript printer that just saves the PS to a file, and then use ghostscript to turn it into something more normal.
