I had a problem with the list view in Nautilus when I first installed Ubuntu on a machine: all fields were unselected, so it showed nothing.
I am told this was never supposed to happen, but it did. I guess the restriction was made at the UI level, but it (or at least the version I was using) never checked when it was fed a bad configuration.
