The problem is, if you run an MX then someone somewhere will consider
_you_ the asshat.  For example, I send all postmaster mail to
/dev/null because I'm not going to dig through the literally
thousands of undeliverable-spam-bounce messages I see _daily_ to find
the message that someone accidentally sent to 'ferd' instead of
'fred'.  That makes me a non-RFC compliant asshat.  

But I also permit my systems to emit deliverable spam bounces on the
off chance that it is useful to someone else -- that may be RFC
compliant, but gets me considered an asshat by those who beat the "no
backscatter" drum.  

I agree.  Mail used to be cool, fun, and interesting.  Now it's just
painful.  

But all this is merely an interpersonal problem I have, and has
nothing to do with the actual software, most which I consider to be
remarkably hate-free, considering A) what it does and B) the state it
used to be in.
