Which is why my `.profile` says this:

    export LC_ALL=
    export LANG=en_US.utf8
    export LC_COLLATE=C
    export LC_CTYPE=de_DE.utf8

Same here, modulo language preferences. I also explicitly unset
`LC_ALL` and all the other locale-related variables, for paranoia; I’m
curious to know if there’s a reason you export an empty `LC_ALL`
rather than unsetting it.

Maybe it’s just that, as you’ve previously noted, I have a thing
for archæology, but it interests me to observe that I’ve had an
`LC_COLLATE=C` in my shell configuration since time immemorial —
that is, since before my dotfiles were under revision control.
