I've sucked it all down from GMail into Thunderbird via IMAP. I don't know how to turn that into something like a mail archive file(s). Suggestions?

"Compact folders", then dig into Thunderbird's byzantine mail directory structure and locate the mbox file. (Noting that it may have been given
DOS line-endings, just to confuse matters.)

Quite. The mbox format even got its own RFC[1], basically documenting that it's widely unstandardized (read: broken) and, in an appendix, specifying a 'default' mbox format which, even if universally implemented to the exclusion of all other mbox formats, would still be broken.

The mbox format meant well, but it's been corrupted beyond hope of salvation. Now it must die.
