XMMS and beep-media-player are almost the same, except that bmp came
with more plug-ins. The interface is identical, and the XMMS::* perl
modules do not care.

mplayer? don't start. It spews so much verbosity I don't care about
that I just use smplayer for the command line, as it nicely hides
away what I don't want to see when watching a movie.

even cruder is "play"

mplayer has (way too) many GUI's, but they are not included in the
default mplayer. Have a look the "MPlayer Frontends" section in
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/projects.html and see where it all
goes pear-shape:
SMPlayer, KMPlayer, KPlayer, KumaPlayer, namp, Pymp, Pygme, Kino2,
GtkPlayer, MPlayerTCL, eMotion, QUI for MPlayer, MPlauncher, mplay,
MPlayer & XMP GUI Project, Qxmp, QEMPlayer, mplayerTV, X-ChaMan,
Beeh! Player, Home Theater Personal Computer Menu, IDRA, jmPlayer,
gHDTV, WebMplayer, FrogEye, ASDF, GNOME-MPlayer, libplayer, aTunes,
mpxtended, XULPlayer, PyMPlayer, radio.py, MplayerBuddy, JJMplayer,
PyAcceleREMOTER, Tickle Tunes, Xt7-Player, and AniMPlayer.

available mplayer frontends in opensuse:
  gnome-mplayer, kde4-kmplayer, kmplayer, mplayerplug-in, smplayer

and probably a lot more if I would be stupid enough to go look for
them
