I think you should use an official release instead of checking out directly 
from SVN, I would use the latest candidate for 0.20.4 if I was a new user. 
Also, unless you are quite sure you found an HBase bug, I would suggest first 
writing to the hbase-user mailing list so that we can help you with the triage.
