@Todd: Unfortunately the project will suffer if HBase is not as fast as
reasonable for the default config. That is not strictly a technical
consideration but is an important point. We have a bit of a PR battle going on
because another project wants to be the prom queen. It is not possible to
pretend that is not happening.
