Maybe this was an incomplete split? Some deleted parent region
with a daughter that still had a reference to it that was finally
removed when the daughter was finally compacted?
Just guessing here.
Anyway the fix for HBASE-1104 went in and the underlying cause
may well have been what your cluster tripped over.
