Thanks for your answer Ryan, we're currently using dotcom monitor as
standard monitoring tool for all servers and prefer not to switch to other
tools, for now all we need is to know that HBase is available( serving
regions).

Have a look at conf/hadoop-metrics.properties - hbase can publish ganglia
metrics which you can then do whatever with.  That is one good way to assess
the operation of your cluster.
