Thanks a lot for your help. I found the problem. I put "hbase/src/test" in the HADOOP_PATH before "hbase/conf". And "hbase/src/test" happens to have a hbase-site.xml that got picked by my map/reduce program. After I removed it, everything works fine now. Thanks.
