This happens to me all the time too. =(

My hosting provider in CA has a bank of these things that they rent
out by the hour (they hook it up for you), and they're absolute
life-savers:

I'm sure there are better ones out there; this model is pretty old and
is just an existence proof at the $500 price point.  It completely
eliminates the need for "remote hands" unless there's a physical
hardware failure; the thing can even act as a boot device for
installing an OS on a blank machine.  Only gripe is that it doesn't
speak VNC natively.

I dorked around with serial consoles for a while.  Not really
trustworthy unless you've got Sun hardware (where the hardware/bios/os
integration is tight enough that it Always Works Perfectly).

Just something to consider.  The improvement in uptime might be worth
a one-time expenditure of $5/member.
