Just to mention so it wouldn't cause any more trouble, Adamm overlooked that 'domtool' as a user exists in local files on deleuze, not in AFS. So I did the right thing by changing the home directory in /etc/passwd. I have also created the same user in local files on mire, with same UID/GID/HOME, so there won't be any problems. I would like to emphasize that it is now of critical importance not to "shake" the setup in any more ways. I am already aware of some of the things I will change later, but there's no place for them now. By this, I mostly think about the specifics of the AFS setup, but I've seen from experience to date that all AFS changes are easy to do even at a later time - they just require a shell script. So to re-iterate - short term goal: getting things to work, by adjusting everything to work the way domtool and our other software expects it. Long-term goal: identifying specific suboptimal configurations in our working setup, and improving that - one thing at a time.
