Well, lilo wasn't poking in the boot record, it was hardware failure of some kind. Of course, the unfortunate combination was/is that lilo breaks if anything is changed after it is installed into mbr. Btw, if you look at the lilo error messages, each letter in word "LILO" means one boot step, so you can find out what "LI" means exactly.
