To HCP-users,

This email is a heads-up that data formats for CIFTI-2 are now final. CIFTI-2
addresses a number of limitations in the original CIFTI-1 format (see below).

For neuroimaging software developers, we encourage you to incorporate CIFTI-2
compatibility into your platform, as it has many advantages for visualization
of combined surface and volume data, such as those generated by the Human
Connectome Project (HCP) and used extensively in Connectome Workbench (see
Glasser et al., 2013; http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23668970).

For neuroimagers using platforms that are not yet CIFTI-compliant: if your
research would benefit from using CIFTI files (including the HCP public data
release, see http://www.humanconnectome.org/data/), we encourage you to
communicate this interest to the software development team for your favorite
platform(s).

Additional information is available as indicated here:
1) The specifics for CIFTI-2 data formats are spelled out in the
"CIFTI-2_Main_FINAL_1March2014.pdf" document
(http://www.nitrc.org/forum/message.php?msg_id=9513)

2) The specific changes from CIFTI-1 are described in
"CIFTI-2_Appendix_FINAL_1March2014.pdf"

3) Example CIFTI-2 files (cifti-2_test_data.zip) are available in the downloads
section (http://www.nitrc.org/frs/?group_id=454).

4) The initial release of the CIFTI-2 XML parsing/manipulating/writing code is
available on the NITRC download page, http://www.nitrc.org/frs/?group_id=454.
(It also supports CIFTI-1 XML, which requires dealing with reversed dimensions
in the NIfTI-2 header; CIFTI-2 does not have this problem.) It does not
include code for reading or writing NIfTI-2 files. This code is released under
the BSD 2-clause license.

5) A new release of Connectome Workbench that can read and write CIFTI-2 files
will be available soon (target date early April;
http://www.humanconnectome.org/software/get-connectome-workbench.html).

Sincerely,
The HCP Software Development Team
