The MEG data uses a different surface resolution than the MRI data, so the MRI spec file and data cannot be visualized in the same instance of workbench.
You were on the right track with what you did first, opening the *.surf.gii and related MEG data files. You may need to switch the viewing mode on the top left to "montage", "all", or "surface", and then turn a layer on with a checkbox at the bottom left of the window. You can also open files by specifying them as command line arguments to "wb_view", and opening them that way will attempt to set up some "default" viewing tabs for the types of data loaded.
