In this case, it would be *much better* to use the command line options
that are already available for the case in which you do not have field
map files rather than making any modifications (including commenting out
code) in the core scripts. I think things will go much smoother for you
if you follow this intended path.
 
I apologize if the fact that this was the intended path wasn't as clear
as it should have been. Thank you for bringing this up on the HCP-Users
list.  I hope that by going through this question and answer process
openly, we have saved a number of others from similar frustrations.
