I don’t know if SPM requires uncompressed NIFTI or not. As for the additional files, some are gradient corrected versions of a given file, or auxiliary files to be used in processing that file with the HCP Pipelines (e.g. for a structural image there are two phase reversed spin echo images that can be used to compute a field map for readout distortion correction.
