I finally worked What happen was the following though. I had installed the jpeg library into a directory in which i had an hdf5 build with mpi support. My guess is that this directory was somehow hardwired into the configuration for the h4cc compiler. So, when it came to building the h4toh5tools it tried to link that hdf5-mpi build in even though i pointed to my other hdf5 build via --with-hdf5.
