Hello,

First let me say that I am still new to the Linux environment, and thanks in
advance for your help and patience. I'm trying my best here! :)

I need to install hdf5 on my machine so that I can analyze netcdf files in
programs that use hdf5. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 with 64-bit architecture.
I downloaded hdf5-1.8.7-linux-x86_64-
static.tar.gz from the HDF website
thinking that was what I needed. I decompress the file and read the README,
but am still a little perplexed so I check the online instructions here:
http://www.hdfgroup.org/ftp/HDF5/current/src/unpacked/release_docs/INSTALL

However, these instructions say that I can do the usual ./configure, make,
make install sequence to install, but there is no configure file in the
download.

So my questions are:
1) What am I doing wrong?
2) Is this the best way to install (i.e. is there a debian method)?
3) I posted this question at ubuntuforums.org and got 1 reply saying that I
needed to install the Java development tools to build it. Is that true?

Thanks a million!
Mike
