Subject: [Hdf-forum] Donald cruises into quarter-finals
Luke Donald's bid to keep the WGC-Accenture World Match Play trophy in
English hands is still alive after another superb display at the Blue
Monster in Arizona on Friday.
Donald, trying to emulate Ian Poulter, has yet to trail all

and reached the quarter-finals with a 3&2 victory over rising star Matteo
Manassero.
The 17-year-old Italian is the youngest player ever to compete in the event
and was on a real high after knocking out Steve Stricker and Charl
Schwartzel.
But the 2009 British amateur champion, already a European Tour winner in
his
nine-month-old professional career, found Donald a much tougher
proposition.
And now Donald, if he can go all the way and end five years without a win
in
America, will move to third in the world behind Lee Westwood and Martin
Kaymer - with Graeme McDowell fourth.
Europe has not been able to boast such a situation since 1992 through Ian
Woosnam, Nick Faldo, Jose Maria Olazabal and Seve Ballesteros.
Manassero could not match the 33-year-old's

at the first and fourth, bogeyed the next and then saw his opponent fire
in
his approach to three feet at the seventh.
Ninth seed Donald did lose the long eighth, but his response was immediate
-
a 20-footer for another birdie at the next and then a par on the 10th to go
five up despite driving into a greenside bunker.
Manassero chipped in for eagle at the 13th and birdied the 15th to take
that
as well, but Donald clinched his first last eight spot in seven attempts on
the next.
McDowell has still to make the quarter-finals in his career, however, after
going out to Korean YE Yang.
Northern Ireland's US open champion had come from behind in his first two
games and threatened to do the same when he took the ninth and 10th to
level.
But Yang, the player who beat Tiger Woods head-to-head in the 2009 US PGA
Championship, went away from him again and sealed victory with a chip-in
birdie at the 16th.
Biggest win of the day went to 47-year-old Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez,
8&6 over Ben Crane a day after the American had crushed Rory McIlroy 8&7.
Jimenez, trying to become the oldest winner of the title by 10 years, won

, three of them with birdies, and never looked back.
Meanwhile, Kaymer, who needs to reach Sunday's final to replace Westwood at
the top of the rankings, was all square with American Hunter Mahan with
three to go.

Subject: [Hdf-forum] Stroud reels off 8 birdies, one shy of PGA record
PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico — Chris Stroud reeled off eight birdies in a row
--
one shy of the PGA Tour record -- to seize a three-shot lead after two
rounds of the Mayakoba Golf Classic.
Stroud had nine birdies on the day, including eight straight from the ninth

TaylorMade Burner SuperFast TP 2.0 Driver
on the par-71 El Camaleon course.
The American had opened with a birdie, but gave one shot back with a bogey
at the par-four sixth hole, as he finished with an eight-under 63 for an
11-under total of 131.
"You can never get ahead of yourself," Stroud said. "Tomorrow is another
day. I've got to come out and do the same thing tomorrow and look for a
consistent routine and stick to my process, and whatever happens at the end
of the week is where I end up."
Stroud, 29, hasn't won in five seasons on the US PGA Tour. His streak of
birdies was one short of the record of nine straight set by Mark
Calcavecchia in the second round of the 2009 Canadian Open at Glen Abbey.
"I was just trying to stay out of my own way," Stroud said. "I wasn't
really
thinking about it. I really had two good chances on 17 and 18, had about a
25-footer up the hill and then probably an 18-footer on 18.
"Seventeen, I left

a little short and I told myself, 'Let's just hit a good putt.' I hit a
pretty good one, but it didn't break."
Australian Cameron Percy and American Kevin Stadler both carded 66s and
South Korean Sunghoon Kang a 67 to share second on 134.
Australian Jarrod Lyle (66) and Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson (67) were among a
group of seven players sharing fifth on seven-under 135.
Stroud launched his birdie binge by rolling in an eight-footer at the
ninth.
He made a 10-foot putt at the 10th and an 18-footer at 11.
At the par-four 12th he made a six-foot putt. At the par-five 13th his
two-iron was short of the green and he had to chip on, but he made a
four-footer.
He drained a 15-footer on 14, then hit an eight-iron to two feet on the
par-three 15th and made that. He capped the run with another 25-footer at
16.
"Everybody knows it out here, it's all putting," said Stroud, who missed
the
cut in his last three starts. "Most of us hit

pretty well, and a lot of days when you don't hit that well and you putt
and chip well, you're still going to make a pretty good score."
Notable names missing the cut in this event, which is played opposite the
elite World Golf Championships Accenture Match Play Championship in
Arizona,
included Australian Aaron Baddeley, who won the title last weekend in Los
Angeles.

Subject: [Hdf-forum] Woods, Poulter crash out early
Tiger Woods didn't last very long at the WGC-Accenture Match Play
Championship on Wednesday.
The long-time former world number one and owner of more Major and WGC
titles
than anyone else, was sent packing by Dane Thomas Bjorn at the 19th hole of
their first-round 18-hole duel at the Carlton Ritz Golf Club's Blue Monster
golf course at Dove Mountain in Arizona
With the longest barren spell of his

now stretching to 18 events, Woods joined defending champion Ian Poulter
in
crashing out of the tournament in sudden death.
Despite some shocking shots - he hit his ball almost into the middle of the
lake on the short third - Woods led by one with six to play, but Bjorn then
birdied the 13th and 15th.
The former world number one, whose last victory was 15 months ago in
Australia, a week prior to the sex scandal that exploded around him and put
his life and his golf in turmoil, levelled with a nine-foot birdie putt on
the last, but could not recover from a wild drive when they went to the
exrta hole.
So Bjorn, only 134th on the rankings before he won the Qatar Masters
earlier
this month, claimed the scalp of the player whose only previous first-round
round loss in this event was nine years ago to Australian Peter O'Malley.
"He's not playing his absolute best, but there were a lot of good

there," said Bjorn. "He's taking strides. There's a way back for him and
he'll get there."
Poulter lost to 2009 Open champion Stewart Cink - and last year's runner-up
Paul Casey breathed a huge sigh of relief that he did not exit as well.
Twelfth seed Poulter was two up with six to go, while sixth seed Casey, who
has reached the last two finals in the event, survived only when Australian
left-hander Richard Green three-putted the 19th.
In the end Casey squeezed through, but

was certainly touch and go.

at The Open at Sanwhich in July with an opening 65 at the International

Ichihara blitzed the front nine at Amata Spring, picking up five birdies in
the first eight holes and two more coming back to finish seven under par
and
one shot ahead of Shiv Kapur, Siddikur Rahman and Lee Sung-man.
"My putting was very, very good," the 28-year-old told the Open's official
website.
"I holed out a lot of putts from 10 to 20 feet and when I was in trouble on
three occasions my putting saved me. It's my first competitive round of the
year and I feel relaxed."
Rising Bangladesh star Siddikur confirmed his

as three consecutive birdies from the ninth set the platform for the

also signed for a round of six under to finish alongside Siddikur and

Subject: Re: [Hdf-forum] Tseng wins again
Opening with rounds of 68, 71 and 67, Tseng had a two-stroke victory going
into Sunday's final round, and started strongly with a birdie on the
second,
before a three-hole birdie run from the sixth virtually ensured she merely
needed to keep it together with pars from then on in order to seal the
deal.
And seven straight pars were to follow, before birdies at the par-three
16th
and par-five 18th capped what was a wonderful week for the world No 1.
"I could feel victory at the 18th hole, especially with so many fans
yelling
'Go! Go!' " Tseng said.
