Marina,
It looks like the instructions suggest to build thread safe HDF5 library
("--enable-threadsafe" configure flag). We do not support this configuration on
Mac.
On Linux one has to specify "--enable-threadsafe --with-pthread" flags to
configure and build thread safe HDF5. The error you are getting indicates that
you are missing pthread library.
You may try to use both flags to build (unsupported) thread safe HDF5 library
or remove the "--enable-threadsafe" flag. I used just a shared HDF5 library
when I built H5Py on my Mac.
