Hi Sean,
Can you try downloading the pre-built version of HDF-Java for
the Macintosh to see if you can run HDFView with it? (In other words,
try running HDFView *without* using InstallAnywhere.)
You can get that from here:
http://www.hdfgroup.org/ftp/HDF5/hdf-java/bin/
Go into the appropriate directory (eg. macintel64/ ) and
download hdf-java-2.9-bin.tar.
Once you untar the hdf-java-2.9-bin.tar file, go into the bin/ directory
and edit the hdfview.sh script. Make sure that HDFVIEW_HOME and JAVAPATH
point to the correct locations. Then run hdfview.sh.
Does that work?

For fun, I tried too, both the 32 and 64 bit versions. I tried unzipping with
both Archive Utility and 'unzip' in Terminal. In all cases, I can't launch any
of them. In Console, I see:
