I'd still argue that this is a bug in parallel hdf5. What I mean is a nice error message saying that this is a known limitation of PHDF5 because it depends on ROMIO and MPI and 32 bit signed integers and a link to the FAQ would be much much better than the stack trace that the current code generates.
