Your report omitted the important detail of your compiler version.  The
"dt_arith" failure looks
similar to <http://www.hdfgroup.org/HDF5/release/known_problems/>
"Conversion Tests Fail
on Ubuntu 11.10 with gcc 4.6.1", where you are advised to use "CFLAGS=-O1
./configure".
