Rashmi Vinayak commented on HDFS-7715:
--------------------------------------
Hi Kai,
In my implementation, I perform RS and the HH specific calculation at once. But
I do re-use the RS encoding method to calculate the RS part of the parity.
While recovery as well, the implementation uses the RS decoding method to the
extent possible/necessary and then does HH specific calculation. However, I
have not really optimized the implementation much. So there could be better
ways to implement in order to improve the performance of encoding and recovery..

> [Hitchhiker |
> http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/~nihar/publications/Hitchhiker_SIGCOMM14.pdf] is
> a new erasure coding algorithm developed as a research project at UC
> Berkeley. It has been shown to reduce network traffic and disk I/O by 25%-45%
> during data reconstruction. This JIRA aims to introduce Hitchhiker to the
> HDFS-EC framework, as one of the pluggable codec algorithms.
> The existing implementation is based on HDFS-RAID.
