[~bobhansen], it is very difficult to review a patch that mixes code changes
with large scale refactors. Please refactor the code separately. Such code is
very easy to review and commit.
[~wheat9], given it takes a long time to split this, can the patch be committed
as is or with minimal changes? I can help you with the review.
