Have you looked at the newest design doc in 1580? It's changed so that
JournalManager has a smaller role, and is only ever used to create input and
output streams. Unfortunately I've been caught up with other stuff this week so
I haven't been able to implement any of it. But hopefully this weekend I'll be
able to get around to it.
