I filed the same as part of HDFS-12160, but closed as not-an-issue since I
realized it compiles fine on the official website:
http://hadoop.apache.org/docs/r3.0.0-alpha4/hadoop-project-dist/hadoop-common/Metrics.html
It appears that although the official website render engine doesn't mind the
pipes, the GitHub one does. Not sure if we care about this?
