Thank you so much [~linyiqun] to help to revert the change!
I think the general rule is that if this incompatible change is not in 2.9 we
should not put that in 2.9.1. Same as the 3.0.x line.
This level of incompatible change should be OK between point versions like
between 2.8 and 2.9.
