i posted a PR #3243 let me know how you think.
The PR does not resolve the issue. It merely makes the exception more graceful
(FileNotFoundException instead of NPE). When the bad edit log is written and
loaded, it's already too late. NameNode can work around the exception by
supplying the startup option -recover.
