I was wrong about trunk - I had not updated to the latest trunk and once I did,
I could reproduce this consistently. It is easily reproducible on
branch-2.0.0-alpha as well.
I have closed it down to the changes in HDFS-3157. Without HDFS-3157, the test
passes consistently and with the patch, it fails. I am going to unassign
myself from the JIRA and going to ping HDFS-3157
