Eli Collins commented on HDFS-2802:
-----------------------------------
Thanks Hari. Wrt scenario #3 doesn't this imply that the user would have to run
two HBase instances on the same cluster - one running from /hbase and one
running from /snapshot/hbase? If not then you need to shutdown the HBase
instance running on the production data and then restart it with the snapshot.
Maybe I'm missing something but both options (stopping the production instance
and running two instances on the same production hardware) seem unrealistic.
Also, don't HBase snapshots (HBASE-50) solve this problem? Are there other use
cases aside from HBase?

> Snapshots are point in time images of parts of the filesystem or the entire
> filesystem. Snapshots can be a read-only or a read-write point in time copy
> of the filesystem. There are several use cases for snapshots in HDFS. I will
> post a detailed write-up soon with with more information.
