The hooks were initially thought to be along the lines of what Herriot did for
MR side of things: daemon controls, fault management, etc. However, none of the
fault injection framework exists in the trunk after mavenization effort (and
now I think it has been completely removed from trunk), so this might not be
relevant for past 1.x Hadoop.
