Steve, this is exactly what HttpFS is for, and it compat with webhdfs. HttpFS
is part of Hadoop2.
A while ago I've done a backport to Hadoop CDH3
(https://github.com/cloudera/httpfs), at the time I've tried doing the same for
Hadoop 1 but I've run into quite a few issues due to differences in common
between Hadoop 1 and Hadoop2.
