Lohit Vijayarenu commented on HDFS-1451:
----------------------------------------

This would be useful. With this kind of feature once could decide how to place
replicas of files based on performance vs reliability. If one has multi level
topology (like power domain followed by racks), once can chose to place
replicas across power domain so that even losing few power outlets will not
cause outage to important files.

> Extend the pluggable block placement policy interface to handle/allow
> file-level intelligence

> The current pluggable block placement policy interface
> (https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HDFS-385) sets the policy globally. I
> propose to have this interface be extended to allow setting the policy on a
> file-level basis. For example, there may be cases where certain files may
> simply need the default policy and certain other files need more complex
> block placement policies.
