[~shv] There are some protocol methods such as startCheckpoint(),
endCheckpoint() only used by BackupNode. We have had some discussion about
removing/retaining it. Do you still plan to continue to work on it or is
2.1.0-beta a good time to remove it.
I also plan on not enabling retry cache for these methods (not because of the
code to enable it is hard, but adding tests for it is hard.)
