I implemented the API we've been discussing.
Some changes: I used EnumSet rather than varags, to avoid varargs overhead.
The byte buffer release method doesn't need to take a factory, because we track
what factory created the ByteBuffer anyway. (We have to do tracking for the
memory mapped buffers).
