Oops, you're right. I had forgotten about that initialize() paradigm we use
here instead of a constructor.

Can we call this "home directory prefix" instead of "home dir base"? It seems
clearer. Similarly, homeDirBase -> homeDirectoryPrefix, etc.
+1 once that's addressed
