I don't have much experience with the current Apache Hadoop releases, but we have a number of customers running nicely on CDH3b2, which has append on by default; see http://www.cloudera.com/blog/2010/07/whats-new-in-cdh3-b2-core-hadoop/ for more. For Apache Hadoop, check out the 0.20-append branch or the upcoming 0.21 release. Append should work well in both, and if it does not, please file a bug report.
