I realize that the Internet gives some the ability to rant and rave about all sorts of things, but sometimes a little reality check is a good thing.  CBS has long said that they can't use wireless, hand-held HD cameras because the compressed microwave links that are required delay the signal too much.  The compressed video would be out of sync with the wired HD cameras on the same hole.  Yes, handheld HD cameras are available.  Uncompressed wireless transmission of 1.5 Gigabits/sec data is generally not available (outside of the military.)

I didn't see the bad pixels on the camera that is/was being vilified.  Just remember that ALL cameras have some bad pixels.  They are usually not noticed.

I thought the biggest reality check was in an interview with Frank Chirkinian of CBS (sorry if I mis-spelled his name.)  He spoke about how the weather was so bad one year that, during an 18-hole playoff, when CBS went on the air the golfers hadn't reached the 15th hole, where the coverage started.  They had to fill time with all sorts of shtick until the golfers made it to 15.  Remember, time was when tournaments were only able to be covered on TV from "15 in," or just the last 3-4 holes.  As the technology improved (mostly due to the availability of Triax camera cable) coverage started earlier.  It hasn't been that long that we've been able to show all 18 holes of golf, even on the Majors.  Now they're in HD (sort of.)  We've come a long way!

Producers and directors do not want to give up portable, wireless coverage just because it isn't HD.  Even though I'm a big fan of HD, I realize that most people want the coverage that wireless cameras provide, and that most people are watching the show in SDTV.  We'll get there eventually, but CBS' coverage is far from a disgrace.

Subject: [ HDTV in the NYC Area ] Curse CBS-HD !!

Why the rant?

They have a HD camera around the 1st Masters Hole that has a burn in pixel.

This had me thinking that 3 of my HD sets have the same.

Can't CBS get their act together.  The fact that not all the Masters cameras are HD is a disgrace.
