Heidi There are several issues with the x-refs in the heading "Police" (sh 85104183) which I would like to discuss with out Law team.
Please note that the adjectival qualifier Christian as in "Christian police officers" (sh2001011432) clearly refers to the religion of the police officers. In the case of Jews, however, things are more complicated because the adjective "Jewish" may designage members of the Jewish faith or members of an ethnic group. Memo H351 on ethnic qualifiers states: "when establishing a topical heading with adjectival qualifier that designates a particular ethnic group, establish it in INVERTED form". If we follow the ETHNIC directive, the heading would be Police officers, Jewish. But then, how does this square with the instructions in memo H306 Natural language in topical subject headings? Give me a few days to explore all these issues with the law team and on Boy Scouts honor I will get back to you. I have seen in LCSH the following: African American police Christian police officers Gay police officers Lesbian police officers "Police officers" exists as a cross-reference to "Police" I think that I should propose "Jewish police officers" since we already have "Christian police officers" but I would like some help understanding why we have Afican American police but Christian police officers.
