Hi, I think Robert meant that 1849 was 1916/1917 per the linked article Yossi
had sent. 1849-1836 (the date in Yossi’s publication) is a difference of 13
years; 1916/1917-13 = 1903/1904. However, I’m not sure about Ben-Yehudah’s use
of the date 69 CE as the year of the destruction of Bayit Sheni. Dates given
range from 68 CE (per Seder Olam Rabbah) to 70 CE (per Sefer Ezra‘). To be
safe, you probably ought to give the Gregorian date as the range “between
1902-1905”.
As for recording the publication date, I’d transcribe what’s on the piece in
the vernacular field and supply the Gregorian equivalent in square brackets
following the romanized form of the date:
300 |c אלף אתתל"ה לחרבן.
300 |c elef 836 la-H.urban [that is, between 1902- 1905]
Optionally, you could add a 500 descriptive note explaining that the date
provided is counted from the destruction of the Second Temple which occurred
sometime between 68 to 70 of the Common Era.
